June Issue 2007

Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, Features Digital Art Exhibition

It's fresh, it's in, it's high tech. Smart Art: Images from the Digital Universe at the Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, features 14 artists who have created beautiful, stimulating art with the click of a mouse. There is also a gem of a sculpture show in the Upstairs' Small Works Gallery. Karen Ives: Parts and Portions presents the whimsical, colorful and site-specific work of an exciting new Asheville artist. The exhibits continue through June 30, 2007.

Yes, digital technology has not only ushered in the Information Age, it is providing artists the opportunity to expand their vision and redefine notions of what constitutes art. At the Upstairs the results are a rich and rewarding variety of art forms, including photographic assemblages, collage, computer projections, zoetropes, TV video and art quilts.

The artists participating in Smart Art: Images from the Digital Universe are Crista Cammaroto, Charlotte, NC; Stewart Dickson, Michael Folliet, Kevin Hogan, Mary Anna LaFratta, Asheville, NC; Roy Drasites, Chapin, SC; Jim Edwards, Columbia, SC; Susan Fecho, Wilson, NC; Fran Forman, Watertown, MA; Donna Goodman, Florence, SC; Sherrie Hunt, Weaverville, NC; Sam Wang, Clemson, SC; Barbara Webster, Burnsville, NC. Curator Lynette Miller is an established photographer and mixed media artist from Fletcher, NC.

Two programs complement the digital art exhibit. On June 3 at 3pm, Barbara Webster will give a lecture with demonstration about combining digital photography with the craft of quilting; the fee is $3 for members, $5 for nonmembers. On June 16 at 1pm, Kevin Hogan takes people inside the world of computer projection to experience how to make art; those who have laptops should bring them. The programs are free.
