Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, Offers Works by William Martin Jean

An exhibit titled, Sabi Series, featuring new work by William Martin Jean has opened at the Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC. The exhibit continues through July 7, 2008.

Jean is one of those exceptional artists who, after a successful career as an outstanding teacher and arts administrator, now works full time in his studio. He has been associated with the Silver Fox Gallery exclusively in Western North Carolina for more than five years and meets annually with many of the dedicated collectors of his art in this area. Jean's works have become the focal point of a number of elegant new homes in this area.

Three of Jean's works were recently added by the prestigious Cleveland Museum of Art to its print collection. His work can also be found in private and corporate collections nationwide including The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, DC. His most recent New York showing was in Mar. 2008 at the New York Armory, Works on Paper.

Jean's current work in Sabi Series is based on the quintessential Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi that deals with the perfect beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. That is to say that there is beauty to be found in things that age: the patina on a work of sculpture, aged wood and ancient walls. Jean is absorbed in making works of texture and subtle color references that create a dialogue between the viewer and the work.

In this work, Jean eliminates inessentials to emphasize the elegance of texture and color. He stains rice papers to create rich layers of color that interact to make a simple statement reveal poetic depth. Jean makes slashes of calligraphic brushwork, infusing his work with energy that contrasts with the overall introspective, contemplative nature of his work.

"Although I strive for perfection," Jean said, "I know that perfection and imperfection are mirrors of the mind, and that as aspects of Yin and Yang, neither can exist without the other."

Jean is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College and completed his graduate work at Case Western Reserve University. He has traveled and studied extensively throughout Europe, North Africa and Mexico.
