June Issue 2009

Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, Presents Three Summer Shows

Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, will present three new exhibitions on view from June 5 through July 18, 2009.

Typography is the subject of Stretch: Type, an installation by Janette Grassi and Doni Jordan. Playing on typography as symbol, communication, and connection between words and books, the exhibit consists of works on canvas, paper, wood, assemblages, gel prints and collage. Jordan lives in Columbia, SC; Grassi is from Charlotte, NC. They collaborate frequently on installations and public art projects.

Fittingly, a second exhibit is about books. Intimate Curiosities: SABA National Book Arts Show is a national juried show from the Southeast Association for Book Arts and is comprised of artist books, altered books, zines, broadsides and other art inspired by books or typography. Twenty artists were selected by juror Bea Nettles, professor, photographer and book artist whose work is in many distinguished collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and International Museum of Photography at Eastman House.

A third exhibit, Wings of Change, introduces figurative clay artist Kat McIver. Every piece in this new series incorporates wings, angelic and otherwise. A transpersonal psychologist, McIver explores her spiritual journey with ceramics and mixed media. She has exhibited coast to coast and abroad and is currently represented by the Bella Vista Gallery in Asheville, NC.

A "Walk & Talk" tour led by the artists is scheduled for June 14, 2009, at 2pm.
