SaxArt Gallery in Saxapahaw, NC, Offers Cultural Traditions of Tibet

SaxArt Gallery in Saxapahaw, NC, is hosting the monks of Drepung Gomang Monastery’s Sacred Art Tour, from June 12 - 16, 2013.

Art is a sacred medium to Tibetans. The Drepung Gomang Monastery was established in 1416 in Lhasa, Tibet and is renowned as a seat of philosophical study and debate. Presently, it has been reconstructed in South India.

The monks will be sharing their cultural traditions of Tibet, including the creation of a sand mandala at the SaxArt Gallery. Admission is free to all visitors to the gallery and donations are welcome. All visitors are welcome to come and witness the great skill and concentration of these remarkable monks, as they create a memorable artwork in sand. This event has been made possible through the sponsorship of the SaxArt Gallery. The location is ideal for visitors, it is handicapped accessible and the deconstruction ceremony scheduled for June 16 at 2pm, at the Haw River that is steps away from the gallery.

Visitors of all ages are invited to join the monks as they create this peace offering to the community of Saxapahaw. In addition to watching the monks create this temporary work of art, the public is welcome to come at 10am to listen to the morning prayers or in the late afternoon to hear evening prayers chanted by the monks.
