Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Brad Thomas

Center of the Earth Gallery, located in the NODA area of Charlotte, NC, is proud to present the exhibition, Brad Thomas: Full Bleed, on view from July 5 through Aug. 3, 2002.

Brad Thomas: Full Bleed is a romp through the psyche of an artist. In this exhibition of new mixed media works by Brad Thomas, the viewer is in the role of voyeur, invited to peer into a deeply personal self-portrait of the artist. For over twelve years Thomas has created journals from pre-existing books. Beginning with a worn copy of Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People, Thomas began his journal keeping - writing, collaging and painting within the book's boundaries. When the journals became too crammed with found objects, images, clippings, paints, fluids, inks and photographs, Thomas taught himself to re-bind the overstuffed books. The resulting volumes became fragile containers for Thomas' desires, criticisms, observations, and ideas.

Full Bleed marks a new evolution in Thomas' work with unique pieces derived from the pages of his journals. Thomas' stream-of-consciousness creations mutate; changing from visual representations of the artist's unconscious to works of art imbued with new meaning. The works become charged with the viewer's perceptions and the knowledge that something not meant to be seen is now not only seen, but seen "larger than life."

Thomas has a BA from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and is a 1998-99 recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship. He has shown throughout the Southeast, both in solo and group exhibitions, including the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh, NC. His work is in numerous public and private collections including Nexus Press in Atlanta, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Atlanta College of Art.
