Sandpiper Gallery on Sullivan's Island, SC, Honors Three Local Artists

Sandpiper Gallery on Sullivan's Island, SC is proud to honor three local artists inspired by the coast as they share their work from July 6 - 31. Jim Darlington will be showing new paintings in oil on canvas including landscapes and figurative work; Dixie Dunbar will present new jewelry in gold and silver with turquoise, coral amber and pearls; and Debra Howard will exhibit works in oil on linen as well as smaller works on gessoed board.

Jim Darlington, of Sullivan's Island, is an award-winning local artist whose work depicting the Lowcountry is rich in hues that capture the sultry moods of our landscape and the serenity of the sea islands. His figurative work captures much more than a face in time; it has a depth that results in contemplation of the life behind the pigment on the canvas. Darlington is a member with Excellence in the SC Watercolor Society, but has more recently been focusing on his work in oils. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, an instructor at both the Gibbes Studio in Charleston and the Creative Spark School for the Arts in Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Dixie Dunbar has been creating jewelry for over twenty years, Influenced by her travels in Europe and the Middle East, Dixie mixes ancient beads and artifacts from around the world with coral, amber, turquoise and fresh water pearls. Her unique combinations of these elements in her necklaces, bracelets, and earrings reflect an opulence of rich and varied cultures that make each piece a work of wearable art. Dunbar has attended numerous workshops at the Revere Academy of Jewelry in San Francisco to master the design and manufacture of her gold and silver jewelry. Dunbar is a native of South Carolina and now resides in Charleston, SC.

Debra Howard, also an award winning local artist, studied art at the Ringling School of Art and began her career in San Francisco where she opened her first illustration studio. Alter 17 years as a successful illustrator, she closed her studio to concentrate on fine art painting. In 1989, she bought her 44 foot sailing sloop, Ling Ling and moved aboard. As she travels from Maine to Miami, Howard paints what she sees on their adventures. "Living and traveling on a sailboat has made me particularly sensitive to my natural surroundings.... I take that awareness and these observations and I incorporate them into my paintings. Subtleties of color, light and shadows are of particular interest to me. Movement and even adventure, naturally express themselves in my work." Howard's work stands out with a style that is recognizably her own. Her series of paintings depicting Lowcountry women continues to develop a following up and down the Carolina coast. Howard lives in Mt Pleasant, SC.

Sandpiper Gallery, which opened Last September, is located on Sullivan's Island in a newly renovated space that has an interesting history of its own. The proprietors of this new gallery, Mark and Julie Sweat, have transformed a space that still suffered from Hurricane Hugo damage into an elegant gallery filled with beautiful creations by local and regional artists. At this gallery you will find a wide variety of fine art including oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels and linocuts by Sally Cade, Will Hegler, Carol McGill, Holly Reynolds, Jim Darlington, and Debra Howard - plus many other visiting artists. The collection also includes functional pottery, jewelry, sculpture, glass, mobiles, photography and unique home furnishings. Custom framing is now available at Sandpiper Gallery as well. The atmosphere at this gallery is inviting and informal; however, the fine work that is offered here, all created by a large array of local and regional talent lends the gallery a casual seaside elegance.
