Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat Rock, NC, Features Works by Ron and Sarah Philbeck

Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat Rock, NC, will feature the pottery and jewelry of husband and wife team Ron and Sarah Philbeck from Shelby, NC, July 1 - 31, 2003.

Sarah Philbeck

Sarah Philbeck's jewelry is hand-fabricated using sterling silver, 14k gold, copper and semiprecious stones. She refers to her work as "Jewelry for the Journey" which is reflective of one's life journey. In her work she shares her feelings, struggles and desires which makes each piece unique. For the past 12 years Sarah has used journaling as a way to seek resolution for questions in her life. It was a natural progression, therefore, when she began using text in her work to express and communicate on a deeper level. In doing so, she feels fulfilled that her work is genuine and soulful. The first pendant she created with text reads "Where do I go from here?" on one side and the answer, which came to her as if in a dream, is stamped on the other side, "Back to your heart."

Ron Philbeck

Ron Philbeck makes salt fired pots that are to be used in the kitchen and enjoyed in daily life. He is totally a one-person operation, creating all his work from start to finish at his pottery. He mixes his own clay, slips and glazes and makes and decorates the pots by hand. His pots are thrown on a Leach style treadle wheel or hand built from slabs. He salt fires all his work in a kiln that he and his father built in 1996. Salt glazing was developed in Germany many centuries ago. Up to 15 pounds of table salt per firing is fed directly into the flame path inside the kiln. The salt vaporizes and forms a glaze on the clay and slips, affecting the color and surface texture making each pot unique.

Sarah and Ron have been married for just over three years and work together at their home near Shelby in separate studio spaces. Ron has a background in mathematics, architectural drafting, and horticulture. Sarah holds a degree in psychology, and is a certified yoga instructor. They strive to create high quality work made with integrity while offering one another encouragement and support throughout their days. They also entertain each other quite a bit and feel very fortunate to be able to do what they love. Their work may be viewed on-line at (philbeckstudios.com).
