Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC, Offers Appraisal Day - Open to the Public

by Gerry Schmitt

Dust off your treasures of furniture, ceramics, and fine art and have them appraised by four top experts from Skinner, Inc., of Boston, who are involved with the popular PBS-TV series The Antiques Roadshow.

The Delhom Service League, an affiliate of the Mint Museum of Art, in Charlotte, NC, will be hosting Appraisal Day on Sept. 6, 2003, from 9am-4pm. This event is open to the public. If you've wondered about the value of your favorite pieces but have never had them appraised, here is your chance to have expert appraisal at affordable cost. Skinner, Inc., one of the leading auction houses in the country, is sending four of their best appraisal experts from The Antiques Roadshow for verbal appraisals at a cost of only $15.00 for the first item, and $10.00 thereafter, with a limit of three items per individual. Some collectibles (with the exception of coins, stamps, jewelry and musical instruments) can also be appraised. For large or fragile pieces too difficult to bring in, photographs will be accepted.

The Antiques Roadshow which began in 1996, has Skinner experts appraising all manner of art and antiques as well as some collectibles - from Early American furniture and scientific instruments, to Tiffany lamps and post-modern artwork; from German bisque dolls and English pottery, to native American artifacts and rare Italian violins.

The Mint Museum of Art and the Delhom Service League are proud to offer the people of North Carolina the expertise of the following Skinner appraisers:

Stephen L. Fletcher, Executive Vice President of Skinner, Inc., and director of American Furniture & Decorative Arts, is widely regarded as one of the nation's foremost experts on Early American Furniture, American Decorative Arts and Folk Art. His expertise in American formal and country furniture, as well as his work over the past thirty years as Chief Auctioneer and generalist appraiser for Skinner, has earned him a deserved reputation as a highly versatile art and antiques appraiser. As chief auctioneer for Skinner, Fletcher can be seen regularly at the Skinner auction podium and he carries a full schedule of institutional and estate appraisals. He is often sought out as a source of knowledge on Early American life, lending his expertise to the media, museums, historical societies, and non-profit institutions. Fletcher frequently lectures and was a contributing presenter and writer of Art and Antiques in Estates, a forum conducted by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, and the Smithsonian Lecture Series.

Colleene Fesko is Vice President of Skinner and Director of their Department of American & European Paintings & Prints. Joining Skinner in 1987, Fesco is responsible for six major auctions per year and has helped establish Skinner as a major player in the American and European paintings markets. She played a key role in the world record auction of Fitz Hugh Lane's View of West Beach, Beverly, Massachusetts, Sunset, for $3.8 million. Fesko oversees sales that include paintings, works on paper and sculpture from the 16th through 21st centuries. Her specialty is American art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She is a former art history instructor and a frequent writer and contributor to arts and antiques publications. Fesko lectures extensively for the Smithsonian Institution, Archives of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and The American Society of Appraisers, the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University and the Peabody Essex Museum of Salem, Massachusetts.

Stuart Slavid is Vice President of Skinner and Director of Fine Ceramics and European furniture and Decorative Arts. He joined Skinner in 1989 as Director of the Fine Ceramics department, specializing in English and Continental ceramics of the 18th through 20th centuries. He also oversees Skinner's silver department, and is a leading auctioneer and general appraiser. Stuart is internationally recognized as one of the foremost authorities on Wedgwood pottery, and his life-long passion for English pottery and ceramics characterizes the strength of Skinner's Fine Ceramics department. In 1993 Slavid was appointed Director of Skinner's European Furniture & Decorative Arts department. His vast knowledge of fine European, Asian, and 19th century American furniture and decorative arts, has established Skinner as a major U.S. force in the sale of fine European pieces to both national and international clients. He is seen regularly on The Antiques Roadshow. His professional organizations include the China Students' Club of Boston, the Wedgwood Societies of New York and Boston, and the American Ceramics Circle.

Stuart Whitehurst is Vice President of Skinner and Director of Rare Books & Manuscripts. He came to Skinner in January of 1995 with over eleven years of experience in the field of fine and decorative arts. Whitehurst was instrumental in establishing Skinner as a leading source for all manner of historical documents, including books, manuscripts, letters, and autographs. This market is one of the fastest growing and strongest at auction. Besides his knowledge of rare books and manuscripts, Stuart is a renowned senior generalist appraiser with extensive knowledge of Latin American Paintings; prints and manuscripts; and English, Continental and Chinese decorative works of art, as well as works of art and furniture from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. He is a favorite on The Antiques Roadshow. Whitehurst regularly conducts appraisal days and benefit auctions for non-profit and charitable organizations. He is a leading auctioneer at Skinner and has lectured before numerous audiences, including the Appraisers Association of America. He is currently an Associate Member of the International Society of Appraisers.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the Delhom Service League ceramics acquisition funds and related educational purposes.
