July Issue 2004

Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Barbara Fisher

The Hidell Brooks Gallery, located in Charlotte, NC's, Southend district, is presenting the exhibition, Balance, featuring works by Barbara Fisher, on view through July 24, 2004.

Fisher's current body of work reflects her ongoing exploration of the visual and psychic tension. New and recurrent elements from her personal visual vocabulary break through her "compartments" and move more toward a landscape-like space. Her laborious layering process involves a marriage of serendipity and intention, as underlying collage elements and surface textures help to define the elements and forms in her paintings.

Fisher's visual elements are comprised of imagery such as vessels, boxes, twisted ladders, long-legged creatures and landscapes interacting together to create one picture plane. However, the relationships between these objects are often as mysterious as the space they cohabit, and the result is a new, harmonious yet at the same time chaotic. The imagery and the composition are challenged to create the tension necessary to maintain balance.
