Capehart Beck the Upstairs Gallery in Blowing Rock, NC, Offers Works by Kevin Beck

Capehart Beck the Upstairs Gallery in Blowing Rock, NC, will present the exhibit, Art of the Heart, featuring plein air paintings by Kevin Beck, from July 3 - 23, 2005.

It's been quite a year for Blowing Rock's favorite plein air artist, Kevin Beck. He spent a month in Panama where people shyly followed him around and wrote him notes asking to see his artwork. (He happily obliged). He opened a gallery in the center of downtown Blowing Rock, together with friend and colleague, Noyes Capehart. Beck taught workshops from the mountains to the coast. And, most importantly, he acquired Mindy a dog of indeterminate breed and endless sweetness and devotion.

Now when you catch sight of Beck with his straw hat, paint box and easel, there's also a little bundle of red fur nearby. Early in the painting, Mindy explores the nearby landscape perhaps scouting out the next motif for her master. When all has been adequately sniffed, she plants herself at Beck's feet, content in his shadow. Park rangers stop to remind the artist to leash his dog. What they don't know is; she isn't on a leash - she's on a retractable clothesline that allows her more range! Ah, man's best friend.

This year's show is a reflection of Beck's intense communion with the landscape and its vicissitudes. Last fall was neon in its autumnal color this is reflected in three Grandfather Mountain paintings of intense hue and drama. The winter was glorious with many crystal clear days accented by cobalt blue sky, sparkling snow and deep shadows; these are depicted in mauve and aqua highlights bouncing off of icy terrain. The many warm spells of winter are captured in an unusual palette of deep wines and golden sage. Our long lazy spring is portrayed in delicate brush strokes of the soft colors of the land awakening from its winter retreat.

New to the familiar Kevin Beck motifs are several coastal scenes of sandy dunes and scenic marshes accented by luminous coastal skies. These gems are the result of several workshops Beck taught on the North Carolina coastline.
