The Metropolitan Arts Council in Greenville, SC, Features Student Exhibition

The Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) in Greenville, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Art Does Education, featuring student work and knowledge artifacts from the Tanglewood Project and the Grove/Tanglewood Model Arts Project, two of the federally funded arts education programs supported by MAC and the Greenville County Schools. The exhibit will be on view at the MAC gallery at 16 Augusta Street in Greenville through July 29, 2005.

Since these arts education programs were implemented in Grove Elementary and Tanglewood Middle Schools in 2003 and 2002, respectively, PACT scores have increased dramatically while problems such as absenteeism, truancy and behavioral issues have steadily declined.

"The arts have significantly increased academic achievement in the curricular areas of English/language arts, mathematics, science and social studies," said Janet T. Newcomb, MAC Executive Director. "Using a professional ballerina in a math class and a musician in a science class has not only enhanced performance but also increased student confidence and morale." These grants have allowed for teachers in high-poverty schools and professional artists to plan and implement team-taught arts integrated units based on South Carolina curriculum standards.

Greenville County is the only county in the country to have received three grants of over $2.1 million from the US Department of Education to implement an arts integration program in its Title I Schools. These three grants also generated over $422,000 in income for local artists and arts organizations over the last three years.
