July Issue 2005

WICKWIRE Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, Features Works by John Smith

WICKWIRE fine art/folk art ". . .where the heart finds art" is pleased to present, Natural Developments, featuring large format, landscape photography by John Smith. The exhibit will be on view from July 1 through Aug. 7, 2005.

As a native of these mountains, John Smith's love of the mountains led him to begin taking landscape pictures in both black and white and color. In 1999, with a 4 x 5 camera, Smith started photographing the mountains with a broader perspective. His goal was to capture the beauty and majesty of the Western North Carolina mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains on a printed piece of paper.

"I want to be able to share my images," says Smith, "for all to understand what it is like to live in such splendor - the kind of splendor as displayed by the four distinctive seasons we enjoy here in the Blue Ridge."

Smith's interest in photography began when he was fourteen trying to take pictures of the moon by placing a camera over his home built telescope. After high school, a part time photography career turned into a full-time career with the General Electric Company for twelve years. Since leaving GE, he has run his own photo labs. For thirty years, Smith has been involved in either taking or printing images.

In 2004, Smith added 8x10 capabilities to his view camera. This type of camera gives him the ability to do big enlargements in both black and white and color with a high level of detail and sharpness.
