Artful Living in Hickory, NC, Features Works by Cameron Prewitt

Artful Living located on Level Three at the Hickory Furniture Mart in Hickory, NC, will feature works by Cameron Prewitt, from July 1 - 31, 2006.

Born in 1976 in Morganton, NC, Prewitt showed an early love for his drawings, paintings and carvings. He earned his BFA in painting and drawing from East Carolina University in 1999. That same year Prewitt married Margaret Johnson. The young couple moved to Tucson, AZ, where he began painting daily.

"I'd go on long hikes into the desert in search of the perfect combination of composition, light and color. Sometimes I'd drive half a day just to see, experience and paint another of the exciting landscapes Arizona has to offer," Prewitt says.

In 2000, Prewitt traveled to Italy to paint and to experience first-hand some of the European master works. Inspired by his travels he returned home with more discipline and intensity than ever before. It was then he committed to a life-time of painting.

Prewitt has been featured in Southwest Art, has won numerous awards and is currently being commissioned by the North Carolina State parks for their new visitor's center in South Mountain State Park, where over 800,000 people visit annually.

"I paint because I must," says Prewitt. "Something drives me to analyze an image and then capture it on canvas. That image becomes a marker of time for me. I can look at a painting I did a few years back and be transported to that exact time, recall every aspect of that moment."

"I classify my style of painting as Neoimpressionism, a combination of an expressionist use of color with an impressionistic brush stroke, and the goal of pursuing the illusion of captured light," adds Prewitt. "Light is the biggest factor in determining what makes a painting interesting. You can have a great composition but if the lighting is flat, the image will be dull and boring".
