Brookgreen Gardens in Pawleys Island, SC, Offers Exhibit on Slavery

Brookgreen Gardens in Pawleys Island, SC, will be the first venue in South Carolina to host Finding Priscilla's Children: The Roots and Branches of Slavery, following its successful exhibition at the New York Historical Society from Nov. 2005 through Apr. 2006. The exhibit will be on display July 10 through Sept. 17, 2006, and features rare documentation directly linking an African American family of North Charleston, SC, with African ancestry in Sierra Leone.

Another feature of the exhibit is a video that provides a virtual tour of the British slave prison located on Bunce Island in the Sierra Leone River. Captured in Apr. 1756, a 10-year-old Sierra Leonean girl was brought from Bunce Island on the slave ship Hare to a rice plantation in Charleston, SC, and given the English name Priscilla by Planter Elias Ball. From the exhibit's records, Priscilla's family was traced to Mrs. Thomalind Martin Polite, Priscilla's 7th-generation granddaughter, who traveled to Sierra Leone in May 2005 as part of Priscilla's Homecoming. An ETV video of the event is in post-production.

Ron Daise, Vice-President for Creative Education at Brookgreen Gardens, participated in Priscilla's Homecoming as a representative of Brookgreen and the Gullah community. He will present Priscilla's Posse: A Press Conference about Gullah Heritage in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium weekly on Tuesdays at 4pm throughout the exhibit. Both the exhibit and Ron Daise's program are included in admission to the gardens.

"Along with our recently completed The Lowcountry Trail outdoor museum exhibit and our ongoing historical programs about the Rice Plantation Era, Finding Priscilla's Children expands Brookgreen's initiative to inform about Gullah culture," Daise said. "Add to this the beauty of the gardens and the sculptures, and the experience is a one-of-a-kind opportunity!"
