Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, Offers Two New Exhibitions for Summer

The Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, presents two exciting exhibits for summer - Artists of the Cloth: Trends in Contemporary Textile Art and Ladies in Waiting. Both exhibits will be on view through Aug. 5, 2006.

Artists of the Cloth is a major show of textile art featuring 12 of the most distinguished artists in the genre. From North Carolina are Jane Dalton, Asheville, Peg Gignoux, Carrboro, Carolyn Nelson, Elon, Patricia G. Samuels, Fairview, Janet Taylor, Spruce Pine. Ellen Kochansky is from Pickens, SC. Other artists are Katherine Allen, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Valerie S. Goodwin, Tallahassee, FL and Eleanor McCain, Shalimar, FL; Ilze Aviks, Durango, CO; and Ann Citron, Alexandria, VA.

The artists are well known for experimenting with traditional textile techniques such as collage, screen printing, dyeing, embroidery, quiltmaking and sculpture to create innovative and powerful pieces. "Not only do these artists demonstrate incredible diversity, they communicate the enchantment of working with cloth and fiber materials," says Samuels, who is also the exhibit's curator.

Ladies in Waiting  introduces Mary Florence Forsythe, Seaside, FL and Chicago, and Jan Kransberger, Asheville, NC. Forsythe's sculptures of women's accessories are made with office supplies, hardware, pearls, fiber and fishing lures. Kransberger crafts minimalistic female figures in kiln-cast glass and mixed media.

The gallery is open until 7pm on Fridays for Textiles by Twilight - a chance to enjoy the art while sipping wine. Textile artist Kochansky conducts a workshop, Preserving Precious Memories, on July 21 (for children) and July 22 (for adults); participants make original art with personal mementoes and fabric. There is a tour of Kochansky's studio on Aug. 1 complete with gourmet lunch. Call the gallery at 828/859-2828 for details on times and fees.
