Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island, SC, Features Works by Keith Spencer and Sharon Meythaler

The Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island, SC, is presenting, South Carolina: Mountains to the Sea, a new art show to celebrate the glories of South Carolina, from the mountains to the coast and everything in between. The exhibition features the work of Keith Spencer and Zola Jewelry, which began in 1997 with artist and designer Sharon Meythaler. The exhibit is on view through Aug. 31, 2007.

Keith Spencer

Keith Spencer lives in South Carolina's upstate region, but uses his creativity to reflect the many things he loves about his home state. He says he feels a close kinship with the lowcountry and the beauty of the marshes and the sea, and his canvas 9es are filled with as many lowcountry scenes as they are the mountains.

"What makes something unique has always interested me," says Spencer. "I think at some level, I am trying to make that uniqueness evident to the person who views my paintings, whether it is a landscape, a person or simply a feeling."

Fish or Cut Bait Gallery owner Brailsford Foster believes that Spencer's comprehensive use of his palette allows him to encompass all of the different and unique parts of South Carolina.

"His colors are so bold and so varied, just like the elements of our state," says Foster. "You get a sense of both the majesty of the mountains as well as the serenity of the lowcountry's marshes. It's rare to find someone who can evoke a sense of the diversity of South Carolina as well as Keith does."

Spencer has a degree in fine arts, but has had the unique experience of managing a horse farm in Kentucky for twelve years. Foster thinks this diverse background naturally leads him to creative diversity as well. His art can be found in galleries throughout North and South Carolina and as far away as Seattle, WA.

Zola Jewelry

The Fish or Cut Bait show is also featuring Zola Jewelry, which began in 1997 when artist and designer Sharon Meythaler returned to South Carolina from a summer spent studying sculpture at New York University. A local boutique owner saw Meythaler wearing one of her own designs and placed an order on the spot, thereby creating a new business.

Meythaler's work features semiprecious stones, freshwater pearls, shells and vintage glass beads. Foster says Zola Jewelry stands out from the crowd with its unique designs.

"Her designs are a wonderful blend of new and innovative ideas, yet still maintain a quality that will allow them to last a lifetime," says Foster. "Some of the jewelry being created today is so trendy that you just know it will be out of place in five years. That is not the case with Sharon's pieces. They are timeless and are keepers."

"I've always enjoyed working with my hands," says Meythaler, "transforming raw materials into something unique and beautiful. With every piece I make, I strive to create a miniature work of art, designed to be worn often and to bring joy to the wearer."
