Art Institute of Charlotte in Charlotte, NC, Offers Exhibit on Life Drawing

Wil Bosbyshell

The Art Institute of Charlotte in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibit, xDemonstrations: an exhibition of LIFe drawings, featuring works by instructors in the Guinan Gallery, on view through July 31, 2009.

The exhibit includes life drawings completed in the classroom by artist/instructors at The Art Institute of Charlotte. Participating artists include Wil Bosbyshell, Roger Hicks, Rea LeGrone, Don Michael and Mike Watson.

The exhibit visually communicates the human form by the use of line, shape and mass in a variety of mediums and demonstrates skills and drawing techniques unique to  the individual instructors.

Each of the artists has taught the life-drawing class at The Art Institute of Charlotte, and each puts his/her own touch on their class through their demonstrations. Bosbyshell, for example, layers large shapes, and then concentrates on the exterior contour line; Hicks smears each new piece of drawing paper with a well-worn rag, then quickly draws masterful detail with charcoal.

This exhibition represents fast drawings done in front of the class or working with an individual student during class. Many of the drawing are flawed, and the flaws provide teaching moments. Others of the drawings are marvelously finished pieces. Some are on good art paper, but many are on scraps found on the classroom floor. The public is invited without charge to enjoy these captured moments of instruction and demonstration.

The Art Institute of Charlotte is a career college focusing on the applied arts including graphic design. It offers its students "fine arts" classes in drawing, color theory, art history and life (figure) drawing courses intended to provide future designers with foundations on which to base their commercial art which is generally computer-generated.
