Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Sharon Dowell, Dana Johns, Maxx Morgan, & Christopher Stephens

Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibit, City/Country, featuring works by Sharon Dowell, Dana Johns, Maxx Morgan, and Christopher Stephens, on view July 3 through Aug. 22, 2009.

Center of the Earth Gallery presents an exhibition of diametric opposites. Sweeping landscapes and urban scenes comprise this show, taking the viewer on an engaging excursion.

Residing in the Shenandoah Valley, Chris Stephens paints almost exclusively from life, in all types of weather. The aim is to know and to capture the color of light. He returns to the same sites over and over, to better see and paint changing light, atmosphere, and seasons. His vibrant colors and high contrast make for a unique approach to a traditional subject.

Dana Johns has recently been contemplating the paintings of George Inness, who once wrote, "the highest art is where there has been most perfectly breathed the sentiment of humanity." Her work is deeply rooted in childhood memories of time spent outdoors in rural Georgia, depicting the underlying spiritual and surreal aspects of nature.

Charlotte painter Sharon Dowell strives to capture the tension between micro and macrocosms of urban settings. Inspired by the mixture of life that surrounds her, she explores the construct of texture, breaking down images and fading her subject to a memory. These works often comment on the changing environment and political or social references surface in the work.

Maxx Morgan

Maxx Morgan feels that "painting the black sky is thrilling; so much is left to your imagination. Light becomes surreal and random signs that are dull during the day spring to life at night, exploding with colors." The Night Series of city scenes by this Atlanta dweller began as a way to capture the quiet time that occurs when the roads become still, thoughts are heard and reflection occurs.
