Grovewood Gallery in Asheville, NC, Expands Exhibition Space - In and Out

The Grovewood Gallery, located at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC, has expanded it exhibition space this summer to include an expanded second-floor Furniture Gallery and by developing a new, annual, outdoor sculpture exhibition. The gallery is also presenting an exhibition by members of the Mountain Metalsmiths Association. The metalsmith show and the outdoor exhibit will be on view through Aug. 31, 2000.

Several years ago, during a Grovewood Gallery Open House, Michele Alexander, Ruthie & Mike Cohen, and Joanna Gollberg demonstrated their jewelry-making methods. They enjoyed their camaraderie so much that they invited other jewelers to join them monthly to share ideas and new techniques. The Mountain Metalsmiths Association, make up of hobbyists, students and master jewelers grew rapidly. Now, 28 members of the Association will be exhibiting their work through Aug. 31. Participating members will also be demonstrating their skills on weekends during the exhibit.

For years, staff members of Grovewood Gallery have dreamed about having a sculpture garden on the grounds outside the gallery. This year, the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville was host to the World Botanic and Gardens Congress 2000. This gathering inspired Grovewood to launch its "Grovewood Gardens" Inaugural Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit which features several large-scale outdoor sculptures, many by members of the Tri-State Sculptors Association, and most by North Carolina artists.

The Tri-State Sculptors Association includes members from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Artists with works on display include, Bill Brown, Roger Halligan, Dan Millspaugh, Gretchen Lothrop, Rudy Rudisill, and others. This exhibit will be on view through Aug. 31.

During this year's annual Grovewood Gallery Open House, held July 8, the gallery premiered its new expanded upstairs Furniture Gallery. The expanded space adds approximately 2,000 sq. ft. of display space, making Grovewood one of the largest showrooms of hand made furniture in the Southeast. New pieces from over fifty artists are arriving daily adding to the growing collection of works by some of the finest furniture makers, including pieces by Kevin Kopil, Lorna Secrest, Michael McClatchy, Anthony Buzak, Lisa Jacobs, Marilyn MacEwen, David Scott, Raymond Bock, David H. Merrifield & Angie Bell, Eric Osborne, Chris Horney, and many more.
