City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Geoffrey Cormier

The City Gallery of the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present and exhibit of oil on paper by local artist Geoffrey Cormier from Aug. 24 - Sept. 23, entitled Simple Entertainment (paintings and shadow puppets by Geoffrey).

Geoffrey Cormier was born in North Andover, MA in 1969. At the age of 3 his family moved to James Island, SC, where he went to school and developed an interest in drawing and playing the drums.

Cormier started painting in high school after his parents bought him a small oil paint set for Christmas. He went to the Savannah College of Art and Design for one year and then to the College of Charleston for one semester. At this time he was playing a lot of music. Cormier owned and operated a bicycle shop for four years. He was then offered a job on a movie set where he continued designing and building sets for television and film for six years. He then moved back to Charleston where he wrote two books on folk artists and continued painting and playing music. After realizing he was seeing puppets in his head as he played music, Cormier started building puppets and produced the Wayang Cardboard-Improvisational Shadow Puppet theater. He now paints in his garage after making too big of a mess everywhere else.

Cormier comments on his work: "I like to paint."
