Gallery C and SPCA of Wake County in Raleigh, NC, Feature Pet Portraits by Marjorie Pesek

Gallery C in Raleigh, NC, in conjunction with the SPCA of Wake County is presenting the exhibition, Best Friends: Pet Portraits by Marjorie Pesek, from Aug. 15 through Sept. 4, 2001.

Internationally known for her paper mosaic works on canvas, Pesek has recently begun creating pet portraits to the delight of her collectors. She will be meeting the public and taking commissions of their pets. A percentage of the proceeds will go towards funding SPCA programs. "I've always been intrigued by people and their pets and what their pets mean to them. The idea of creating pet portraits seemed to be a natural extension of my interest in portraiture and capturing the special spirit that resides in all living creatures," says Pesek. "There is not only a beauty and grace to these animals, but also a little bit of humor that infuses their expressions and consequently my portraits of them."

Noted for her innovative use of paper collage, or 'paper mosaic' as she refers to the time and labor intensive process, Pesek credits her direct influences to the photomontages of David Hockney and the early Cubist collages of Picasso and Braque. "I've drawn on art history to inform my canvases with a sense of time and place, but I'm always sure to add a dash of irony and a pinch of humor to make them a very contemporary statement," notes Pesek who currently resides in suburban Minneapolis.

Pesek is also known for her portrayal of icons of contemporary society, homages to famous artists such as Titian, da Vinci, Warhol and Lichtenstein and her photorealistic interpretations of such American landmarks as the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore.
