Pickens County Museum Presents History of Music in Upstate South Carolina

The Pickens County Museum of Art & History in Pickens, SC, will present the exhibition Upcountry Harmony: A History of Music in Upstate South Carolina. The exhibition will continue through Sept. 28, 2001.

This area of South Carolina, where the Foothills of the Appalachian Mountains spilled down onto the Upcountry's railroad cities and surrounding towns, has long been a crossroads of many cultures. In places like ours, the European fiddle tunes and ballads met up with and married the music of the African slaves and sired the varied offspring of Southern music. There was a great exchange and connection, musically, between blacks and whites.

The purpose of this exhibit is to shed a little light on these musical origins and to feature the more prominent Upcountry performers that have grown from these deep, musical roots. It is our hope to leave the visitor impressed with the sheer number of well known performers that have come from our area, many of whom are icons of their field of music... Pink Anderson, Peabo Bryson, Hank Garland, Paul Peek, Sarah Reese, Arthur Smith, Carl Story, The Marshall Tucker Band, Singin' Billy Walker, Josh White, and many more.

On display will be photos, information and artifacts pertaining to the history and development of music in South Carolina's Upcountry counties, including items belonging to Peg Leg Bates, 60's teen star Browning Bryant, Myrtle Hall, Contemporary Christian artist Marty McCall and the Marshall Tucker Band. There will also be displayed, a wide range of vintage stringed instruments, with a display on the evolution of America's only original instrument, the banjo.

Upcountry Harmony: A History of Music In Upstate SC was made possible in part through sponsorship of The Piedmont Harmony Project.
