Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, Features NC Fellows

The Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, is partnering with the McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, NC to bring you artwork by fourteen of North Carolina Arts Council's most deserving grant recipients in the exhibit, North Carolina Fellowship Exhibit, on view through Aug. 29, 2004. Artists participating in the exhibition include: Susan Brandeis, Isabel Chicquor, Daniel Essig, Paul F. Evans, Faye Foster, Amy Funderburk, Brett Ingram, Jonathan Jacquet, Juan Logan, Kimowan McLain, Kurt Nielsen, Michele Tejuola Turner, Renee Vincent, and LM Wood.

This biennial exhibition provides a unique opportunity to gain an overview of the current contemporary art being created in North Carolina by artists who are recognized for their outstanding merit. It is interesting to consider the similarities and differences in this wide-ranging work, the exhibition includes photography, film-making, painting, and sculpture.

Upon close examination one can discover certain themes and concerns; an exploration of identity and desire for meaningful connection., a desire to try new technologies or approaches to expand upon time-tested techniques; a reverence for storytelling; and a fascination with the natural environment and its perennial influence.

Since 1980, the North Carolina Arts Council has provided fellowship awards to artists who have been selected through a rigorous panel screening process. The Council awards these direct grants to support artists in the development and creation of art because their work is essential to our cultural heritage and the creative vitality of the state. Fellowship recipients receive $8,000 to set aside time to work, to purchase supplies and equipment or to pursue other artistic goals.

Fellowships recognize the contribution artists make to the quality of life in North Carolina. From the beginning of the program, the Council board recognized the importance of artists to the state's artistic and cultural growth. The program was conceived both to recognize outstanding artists for their accomplishments and to help them produce new work by giving them the time and resources to develop their ideas.

The Council believes that artists are worth public investment, just like roads and buildings, universities and public schools, business and natural environments. In addition to fellowships, the Council also supports residency opportunities for writers and visual artists.

The Hickory Museum of Art is a United Arts Funded Affiliate of the Catawba County Council for the Arts.
