Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Brian Russell and Ramon Urbán

The Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting two solo exhibitions: Brian Russell: New Sculpture and Ramon Urbán: New Constructions, through Sept. 4, 2004.

Brian Russell

Jerald Melberg Gallery is pleased to introduce Brian Russell with his first solo exhibition. Russell combines forged bronze and stainless steel with cast glass to create his unique sculptures. Utilizing the labor-intensive process of casting, Russell first creates the thick glass forms in wax. The wax form is then fine tuned by carving into the exact shape the artist desires. A mold is made from the wax, and that mold is then used to cast the actual glass. The finished glass is then carefully fitted to balance upon its particular base. Russell's mastery of his methods is evident in his sophisticated works of art.

Born in Memphis, TN, in 1961, Russell received his BA in Studio Art from Rhodes College. During his career as an artist, he has been honored with over twenty museum and gallery exhibitions, and his work can be found in numerous private and public collections. A full color catalogue has been published to accompany Russell's exhibition.

Ramon Urbán

The gallery is also pleased to introduce Spanish artist Ramon Urbán with his first solo exhibition. Urbán was born in 1958 in eastern Spain, where he still lives and works. Since 1980, his work has been represented in over seventy-five exhibitions, including fifteen solo exhibits, in Europe, South America, the United States and Japan. Urbán has received much critical acclaim everywhere he has exhibited.

Urbán makes his elegant, shield-like forms by bending wood after soaking it over a period of time. The sculptures are given interest by linear extensions that intersect the forms in various ways. He then paints, stains and draws on the surface of the wood constructions, rendering a subtle patina that appears both contemporary and antique at the same time. The artist's intent is formal, but the unexpected result is absolutely elegant.
