City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Moves to Gaillard Auditorium

The City Gallery at the Gaillard Auditorium in Charleston, SC, (temporary venue for the City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre) will present Sense of Place, featuring works of oil on canvas and pastel on paper by Charleston artist, Susan Gregory. The exhibit will be on view from Aug. 31 through Sept. 20, 2007.

Gregory is a returning South Carolina native. She arrived in Charleston from Denver, CO, in Dec., 2004. Her education includes a BA in Political Science from the University of South Carolina and a BFA in Painting and Ceramics from Western Carolina University. As a student, she focused on representational subjects, often painting from life. Later, during a year of living on Edisto Island, SC, Gregory's painting moved away from realism to mostly non-objective abstractions, derived from landscapes. Her studio is a sunroom at home in uptown Charleston, providing natural light and convenience. While back in Charleston, she has exhibited at the Humanities Center, Pure Theatre, and the Old City Jail. Gregory's work can regularly be found at Cone 10 Studios in Charleston and the City Art Gallery in the Vista of Columbia, SC.

"The works in this exhibit are process-oriented with an exploration of media in ink, pastel and oil," says Gregory. "I enjoy developing the surface, whether on paper or canvas, in a series of layers. Pieces often start with a leaf or shadow or expansive marsh view and move into a focus on formal qualities. Through my studies, influential painters have been Arthur Dove, Pierre Bonnard and Helen Frankenthaler. Having an academic background in art, I appreciate the historical context of painting. Paintings were once a major form of entertainment, as the media functions today. I want my work to provide a similar quality. Rather than offering a distraction for instants, a painting gives the viewer a place to optically and cerebrally linger for years."

Established by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs in spring of 1978, the City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre has presented some 348 exhibitions since its launch. Beginning July 18, 2007 and for the next two years, the Dock Street Theatre will be going under major renovations which necessitates moving the gallery to a temporary location in the Gaillard Auditorium's 2nd floor lobby, until a more suitable interim location can be established. When the Dock Street Theatre renovations are complete, the City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre will reopen in the same location at 133 Church Street.

The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre, at its new location, will continue its mission to exhibit the work of visual artists from the tri-county area, especially those engaged in serious, new, cutting edge, contemporary and experimental work. Annual selections for the City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre exhibits are made in November each year. Artists interested in applying to the 2008 City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre should contact the Office of Cultural Affairs no later than Oct. 31, 2007 by calling 843/724-7305.
