McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, NC, Features Exhibit by University of North Carolina Students

The McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, NC, will present, LAUNCHED: Second Annual North Carolina Undergraduate Juried Exhibition, featuring works by UNC- students, from Aug. 3 through Sept. 1, 2007.

LAUNCHED is a special opportunity for the Art Departments of North Carolina Universities to highlight talented students while providing them with professional development experiences and an opportunity to exhibit their work in a major contemporary art venue in North Carolina.

The following nine participants were selected from nineteen young artists from six schools. The students selected from UNC-Pembroke are Amanda Perrin (printmaking) and Rachel Oke (ceramics and printmaking). Carley Dergins (printmaking and mixed media) and Larkin Ford (painting) currently attend UNC-Asheville. Alexandra Giannell (painting), Vanessa Lathrop (photography), Todd Payne (sculpture) and Darren Goins (photography and printmaking) are students at UNC-Charlotte. Selected from UNC-Greensboro is Redmond Brady (drawing). These students represent the depth and breadth of artistic merit among North Carolina's Colleges.

This exhibition was adjudicated by Bill Gaskins, a photographer and cultural critic. Gaskins is a faculty member in the Departments of Photography and Critical Studies at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. While speaking of LAUNCHED, Gaskins stated: "While contemporary art is currently dominated by photography, digital imaging and the assortment of technologies associated with it, surprisingly painting, with an emphasis on abstraction, is the dominant mode of expression in this exhibition. Whether this is a reflection on the state of photographic education in the Tar Heel state, or simply a regional distinction among students within the UNC system is not clear-but is quite refreshing to see."

This event is co-sponsored by UNC-Charlotte and TIAA-CREF.
