City of North Charleston Presents Traveling Exhibit at Fire Museum in North Charleston, SC

A traveling art exhibit designed to entertain and educate citizens about the connections between South Carolina and Barbados in the West Indies will be exhibiting at the North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center in North Charleston, SC, from Aug. 1 through Sept. 15, 2008.

Jeffrey Callahan Neville Legall

The exhibit, titled The Connection, was created by the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor (SCNHC). It consists of over 70 pieces from South Carolina and Barbadian artists representing various media that reflect the similarities in the fields of Agriculture, Horticulture, Arts, African American Heritage and Maritime Heritage.

Thomas Kelley Pauley

Included with the artwork will be an interpretive exhibit highlighting the rich historical and cultural connection still present between the island and South Carolina today. In addition, a lecture series, interpretive programming and receptions are planned at each exhibit location.

This traveling art exhibit has been on the road since Dec. 2007 with four previous shows throughout the state. In October, the exhibit will travel to Barbados for a four day symposium celebration and a final showing. The four day event will include a day tour of the island, afternoon excursions, expert cultural speakers and an art celebration. For more information about the trip, visit (www.sc-heritagecorridor.org) and click on The Connection or call 866/915-0842.

The Exhibit was born out of a partnership developed between the Barbadian Tourism Ministry and the SCNHC. The nationally designated corridor extends 240 miles across the state, from the mountains of Oconee County, along the Savannah River, to the port city of Charleston. Through visitor's centers, interpretative signage, travel guides and maps, the Corridor leads the visitor on a journey of experiences while telling the story of South Carolina's Native Americans, the Colonial Settlement and the western migration into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center showcases a rare collection of antique fire engines and fire fighting apparatus. The facility educates visitors on the heritage of fire fighting, the dangers of fire and the methods of fire prevention. Also housed within the facility is the North Charleston satellite office of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, which provides services to tourists coming through and staying in North Charleston. This fascinating museum is conveniently located adjacent to the Tanger Outlet Mall, easily accessible from I-26 or Hwy. 526.
