Metropolitan Arts Council in Greenville, NC, Features Works by Lynn Greer

Recent Nightscapes, an exhibit of new paintings by Greenville watercolorist Lynn Greer, will be on display at Centre Stage - South Carolina (CSSC) in Greenville, from Aug. 1 through Sept. 26, 2008. The exhibit closes the 25th anniversary season of Centre Stage and coincides with the presentation of the satirical musical Tomfoolery which runs Aug. 7-30.

"We began our very successful collaboration with the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) in 2005 with Lynn as the inaugural exhibitor; her exhibition was so successful, we wanted to close our 25th anniversary season with this new collection of paintings," said B.J. Koonce, CSSC executive director.

Recent Nightscapes consists of both large and small works focusing on urban landscapes at night. Cassis, Greenville, Charlotte and Chicago are just a few of the cities that are depicted by Greer's colorful palette. "I find Lynn's work to be engaging because of her subject matter and her fresh use of color. I also admire Lynn's commitment to her art and to her community," commented Martha Severens, Curator of the Greenville County Museum of Art.

"I love the watercolor medium," Greer said recently. "The fluidity, and unlimited ability to surprise, both add to the enjoyment of painting. I am exhilarated by the process as well as the product, whether I am painting a floral, a portrait or a cityscape. And I feel fortunate when I am able to communicate my joy to others."

"My current body of work focuses on the glow of lights in urban, suburban and rural settings. I am interested in exploring the many possibilities inherent in this subject matter. How many ways can I portray the stages of evening, using both color and contrast? I am also fascinated by the variety of hues in the night sky, depending on season, weather and reflected light from the landscape below. The lights are the stars. The architecture and surrounding landscape play supporting roles," she continued.

A native of Greenville, Greer is a 1979 alumna of the University of Georgia where she majored in graphic design. Upon graduation she returned to Greenville and began a career in advertising, working at several advertising and advertising-related corporations in both North and South Carolina before becoming a full-time painter. For the last twenty years she has made a living painting commissioned works, organizing one-woman exhibits, taking part in outdoor arts festivals and entering juried competitions.

Greer is a member with excellence of the South Carolina Watermedia Society, a signature member of the Georgia Watercolor Society, and a MAC board member. She was recently included in American Artist Watercolor Magazine as one of twenty emerging artists across the country.

"This recent set of cityscapes reveals constant exploration of the watercolor medium," commented Kim Sholly, MAC's projects director, "and these vibrantly colored works reflect the vitality of the downtown and West End areas."
