Grand opening of Gallery Two Queen in Charleston, SC

The grand opening of Gallery Two Queen in Charleston, SC, celebrates beauty of the lowcountry with paintings by Marty Whaley Adams and hand-dyed silks by Paige Hathaway Thorn on Saturday, September 30. There will be an afternoon open house from 1-4pm featuring art demonstrations, a fashion show, and storytellers, and a cocktail party from 6-8pm. Resident artists Marty Whaley Adams and Paige Hathaway Thorn will be on hand to greet guests and give demonstrations of painting and silk-screen printing. Refreshments will be served at all events.

Adams will be displaying new landscape and figure paintings, including genre scenes based on historic photographs of lowcountry lifestyles from the South Carolina Historical Society. During the afternoon open house, storytellers from the Historical Society will relate anecdotes, or "moments in time," from previous eras that provide historic details about the people and events depicted in Adams' genre scenes. Thorn will be displaying her originally designed and hand-dyed silks fashioned into scarves and clothing to wear, throws, and pillows. Her wearable art will be modeled throughout the afternoon open house.

Both Adams and Thorn celebrate the beauty and history of the lowcountry in their work, drawing upon the region's incomparable natural beauty and its rich decorative traditions. Their paintings and textiles reflect the colorful spectrum of the lowcountry, with vibrant chartreuse and lavender tones blended with muted shades of earth and sepia "I love to capture the timelessness of the salt marshes and the beautiful household objects like silver and china which are burnished with time," says Adams of her paintings. "Inspiration for my line of hand-dyed silks comes from both the natural shapes and colors found in the lowcountry and the rich cross-cultural influences that Charleston enjoys as an international port city," explains Thorn.

Adams and Thorns' work is displayed in a new gallery at 2 Queen Street, which the two artists have remodeled and decorated to reflect their shared aesthetic. Paint-washed walls and floors create a feeling of warmth and antiquity. Luxurious furnishings including a giant four-poster bed with an iron canopy and antique chairs and sofas recreate the elegant interiors of Charleston residences and provide and intimate setting for displaying artwork and decorative objects.
