13th Annual Society of Guilders Conference in Charleston, SC

From Sept. 14 - 17, the Society of Gilders will be holding its Annual Conference, Masterworks in the Lowcountry, in Charleston, SC, at the Gibbes Museum of Art & Studio and the Radisson Hotel Charleston. In previous years, the conference has been in such locations as New York City, Philadelphia, Trenton, NJ and Lancaster, PA. Workshops and lectures on all aspects of gilding will be offered. The conference provides a place for gilders, members and non-members, to gather and support each other, to exchange ideas and methods of gilding.

Highlights of scheduled events of interest to area Charlestonians include a very special exhibit of fine gilded objects and contemporary gilded art by artisans from across the US, entitled Gilded Masterworks, to be held at the Gibbes Museum of Art on Sept. 15 & 16. Also on Sept. 17, the Society of Gilders will be hosting an all day "Faux Finishing" extravaganza, with lectures and workshops by world class teachers. A book signing, by decorative painting experts and founders of the internation-ally recognized Finishing School, Ina Brosseau and Allen Marx, will be held on Sept. 16.

This year starts a new tradition with the Society of Gilders' Annual Conference. A community gilding project will take place at the historic St. Johannes Lutheran Church on Anson Street in Charleston. Artisans attending the conference will converge on the church from Sept. 14 through Sept. 17 and repair and regild the cherished historic eagle lectern, altar, and pulpit. The public is invited to watch the progress as it unfolds.

Attendees will begin this four-day event with tours and a kick-off reception for attendees, hosted by Coleman Fine Art in Charleston. Then there will be two days of intensive gilding instruction culminating with the 13th annual meeting and honors banquet. On Sun., the focus will be on advanced Faux Finishing techniques. The credentials of the gilding and faux finishing instructors gathered for this event are outstanding.

The Society of Gilders is a not-for-profit educational organization devoted to the art and craft of gilding. The membership includes artists, sign makers, architectural and object gilders, decorative painters, frame makers, conservators and restorers.
