Davidson College in Davidson, NC, Features Work by Faculty and Susan Brenner

The annual Davidson College faculty exhibition and New Paintings on Paper by Susan Brenner will be on display in the William H. Van Every, Jr. and Edward M. Smith galleries in the college's Belk Visual Arts Center in Davidson, NC, through Oct. 10, 2001.

The exhibition will feature works by faculty members Herb Jackson, Russ Warren, and Cort Savage in the Van Every Gallery.

The exhibit includes a recent body of large-scale acrylic works on canvas by Jackson, who is renowned for his dramatic paintings that employ striking colors and intricate textures. Jackson builds up and strips away hundreds of layers of paint to reveal dynamic abstractions.

Warren continues to explore a variety of charged symbols in a new series of paintings entitled I Dream of Altamira. These lyrical oil paintings combine humor with Warren's unique stylistic approach to create images that are both chaotic and harmonious.

Savage, a sculptor, will debut kinetic works which employ eclectic materials and mechanization that create a unique sensory experience for the viewer.

The Smith Gallery will feature a new series of paintings on paper entitled Dissections by Charlotte, NC, artist and educator Susan Brenner. Brenner said, "...the paintings deal with the body as physical, biological material. Through posing and sometimes punning, they refer both to what is hidden within the body, and to the external environment that surrounds it."
