Statue Honoring CCC Workers to be Unveiled, Dedicated at Oconee State Park in Mountain Rest, SC

The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, in conjunction with the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni, will hold an unveiling and dedication ceremony for a six-foot bronze statue of a CCC worker at 1:30pm on Sept. 16, at Oconee State Park in Mountain Rest, SC. A covered dish luncheon for CCC alumni and their families will be held in the park's main office meeting room at noon. State Senator Thomas C. Alexander (R-District 1 -Oconee and Pickens) and State Park Service Director Van Stickles will be on hand for the ceremonies.

Andy Davis, Oconee State Park Manager, said the statue, which will be the only one of its kind erected in South Carolina, "will be a great new addition to the State Park Service."

"SC PRT, the State Park Service, and South Carolinians in general, owe a huge debt to so many CCC workers who built the first state park system here in South Carolina during the 1930s," said Davis. "We are delighted that such a fitting tribute to these fine men will stand here on the grounds of Oconee State Park."

Oconee State Park, one of the original 16 state parks built by the CCC during the Great Depression, also has an annual reunion luncheon for former CCC workers every year.

E. "Spec" Jamison, local CCC reunion coordinator, said former CCC workers everywhere in the state are grateful to the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, the State Park Service and state Senator Thomas Alexander for appropriating approximately $20,000 for the project.

Jamison said, "I hope all former CCC workers and their families will participate in the reunion covered dish luncheon beginning at 12 noon and then stay for the statue dedication ceremony immediately thereafter."
