Take a Stroll through Charleston, SC's Art District

The French Quarter Gallery Association in Charleston, SC, will host its annual fall and winter Art Walks on Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, and Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, from 5-8pm. During the Art Walks, all 30 French Quarter galleries will open their doors to the public completely free of charge. Patrons will be able to visit the galleries, meet artists and catch a docent lead tour at the Gibbes Museum of Art. In addition, some galleries will offer refreshments.

The French Quarter District of Charleston was established in the 18th century with the settlement of the French Huguenots. The Art Walks in this area first began to take shape in 1990 with nine galleries participating at that time. As the Walk grew in popularity, the tradition was established that the area French Quarter galleries would host three Art Walks a year, the first Friday in May, Oct., and Dec. (with a charitable event in March). The French Quarter includes galleries along East Bay, Church, Meeting, South Market, Cumberland, Queen, Chalmers, Broad, and Tradd Streets as well as the Gibbes Museum of Art. Maps are available at each of the participating galleries.
