Davidson College in Davidson, NC, Offers Works by Douglas Houchens & Philip Lopez

The William H. Van Every Gallery at Davidson College in Davidson, NC, presents Douglas Houchens: The Primary Impulse through Oct. 8, 2003.

Douglas Houchens: The Primary Impulse is a retrospective exhibition of paintings, prints and drawings by Davidson College's first visual arts professor. He is best known for his vibrant, expressionistic paintings based on stills from classic movies.

When Houchens arrived at Davidson College in the fall of 1953 he was given the charge to establish a fine arts curriculum with an extremely modest budget and very little work-space. He accepted the challenge with great enthusiasm and for many years worked as a one-man department teaching classes in art history, color theory, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and eventually filmmaking.

It is only fitting that Davidson College celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of its Art Department with a retrospective of works by the man who founded it. Douglas Houchens: The Primary Impulse represents and recognizes almost seventy years of artistic exploration as well as twenty-five years of service to generations of students who were exposed to the world of art through his history and studio classes.

A full-color catalogue with essays by Davidson College Professor of English Gill Holland and alumnus Dabney Stuart will be available. Houchens is represented by Christa Faut Gallery in Cornelius, NC.

Also on view through Oct. 8 in the Edward M. Smith Gallery is the exhibition Philip Lopez: Surface Work.

The exhibit features a site-specific installation of constructed, mixed-media works that build on geometric forms and patterns. Lopez distresses the surfaces, creating the patina of worn paint and softening what could otherwise be rough or hard material.
