Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Valarie Jean Bailey and Scott Stockdale

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, will present the exhibition, The Pulpit Series: Prayers, Testaments & Sermonettes, featuring works by Valarie Jean Bailey in the Artspace Upfront Gallery from Sept. 3 - 25, 2004. The exhibit, New Work by Scott Stockdale, will be presented in the Artspace Lobby during the same time frame.

Valarie Jean Bailey

Inspired by historical archives, family photos, and personal objects, Valarie Jean Bailey works in the tradition of elder quilt-makers she met while living in New York. She utilizes various techniques to assist in storytelling, including string piecing with scraps of muslin, wool, cotton, silk, and polyester. Some elements are appliqued to the surface of the quilt along with the use of more three-dimensional elements as well. Flora, with beaded petals, stems and leaves or "biscuits" (a larger piece of fabric is pleated and sewn to a smaller piece and stuffed to form a "puff") are common elements in Bailey's work. The work featured in this exhibition references local and global political issues, the celebration and preservation of the environment, and folk wisdom passed down through generations.

Bailey is a visual, historical storyteller utilizing quilts to express her convictions and vision. Her beliefs are rooted in community and the commitment to a cultural continuity of quilt art. Bailey has been a member of the Artspace Artists Association since 2002. She has widely exhibited her quilts in group and solo exhibitions, including recently at the Greenhill Center for North Carolina Art and the African American Atelier, both in Greensboro, NC.

Scott Stockdale earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in sculpture from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC. He lives on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where he operates a working studio and art gallery on the historic Manteo waterfront. Stockdale's work can also be seen locally at Glance Gallery in Raleigh. He currently runs the Professional Crafts Clay Department at the College of the Albemarle.
