Cultural Council of Georgetown County in Pawley's Island, SC, Features Works by Emerging Artists

The Cultural Council of Georgetown County is presenting a fall juried Emerging Artists Exhibition at the Cultural Council's Gallery in the Litchfield Exchange in Pawley's Island, SC. The exhibit will be on view through Dec. 31, 2005.

A couple of the artists in the exhibit are Joel Steelmon and Catherine Thomas.

Steelmon studied art at the College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina. A resident of Holly Hill, SC, his "larger-than-life" acrylics on canvas are inspired by the coastal regions and marine life in South Carolina.

Born and raised in Washington, DC, Catherine Thomas spent many of her childhood Sundays accompanying her artist mother to the National Gallery of Art and Phillip's Gallery in the nation's capital. In her teen years, Catherine visited European museums and galleries, and then put her art on hold while working, getting married and raising six children. Through her oil painting, Thomas is now rediscovering her artistic heritage. She and her husband, Larry, have their own gallery and digital print production business in Leesburg, VA.

The Cultural Council of Georgetown County is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization devoted to acting as a catalyst and partner with the County's arts and cultural organizations to expand their audiences. The Council administers the Artist-in-Residence Program in area schools, Pawleys Island Youth Arts Scholarship Program, Emerging Artists Gallery, and Art classes, among other efforts.

The Cultural Council is funded, in part, by Individual and Family memberships. Corporate-level members include Carolina OBGYN, Conway National Bank, First Citizens Bank, Plantation Federal Bank, Time-Warner and Waccamaw Oncology. Additional funding for projects comes from Georgetown City and Georgetown County Accommodations Tax funds. The Council is also funded, in part, by the South Carolina Arts Commission, which is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
