September Issue 2005

Green Rice Designs in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Jessie Lynn Courson

Landscapes of the Mind, Jessie Lynn Courson's new solo show opening on Sept. 2 at Green Rice Designs in Charlotte, NC, merges her more traditional landscapes with her more psychologically charged pieces. But more than the creative joining of two separate and distinct styles in one show, Courson's work embodies the juxtaposition of two traditions into individual pieces of art. Her creative touch yields a new imagery that can reflect a state of mind, a moment in thought, or a feeling. The exhibit by this Washington, DC, artist will continue through Oct. 15, 2005.

Courson's images move between expressionism and surrealism. Illustrations of the heart, mind, and spirit, they conjure visions of fantastical impossibilities brightly colored and loosely fashioned. Far from the reality of every day life, her images reflect an ethereal second reality - one that takes place in our minds, hearts, and under our skins - but that is nevertheless as substantial as the "real" world in which we live.
