Haywood County Arts Council in Waynesville, NC, Offers Quilt Exhibition and Studio Tour Exhibit

The Haywood County Arts Council in Waynesville, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Seeing Orange, featuring 33 quilts representing the Shady Ladies quilting group. The exhibit will be on view in the Arts Council's Gallery 86 through Sept. 16, 2006. The Arts Council will also present an exhibit of works by artists who will be participating in the Haywood Open Studios Tour. This exhibit will be on view from Sept. 20 through Oct. 14, 2006.

The Shady Ladies are a group of approximately 40 quilt makers organized by Wendy Bowen and Jane Cole who meet each Tuesday at the Shady Grove United Methodist Church - hence the name - Shady Ladies. Although not affiliated with the church, the group appreciates using their wonderful fellowship hall, and loves their name! The group's common bond is their love for quilting in all its forms from the traditional to the abstract. Members come from diverse backgrounds, have different talents, and of course many ideas which they are never afraid to share. The inspiration and support they gain from each other is the secret to the group's continued success.

For the past six years the group's work has been displayed collectively at the Rodman Gallery at the Haywood Arts Repertory Theater, the Haywood County Library in Waynesville, The High Country Quilters annual quilt show, the North Carolina Arboretum, and in Morzine, France. The group has hosted three annual quilt shows: Lake Logan Reflections - Quilt Art by the Shady Ladies, at the Lake Logan Episcopal Center with more than 100 pieces of new work shown each year. They also have had the honor of making the fundraising quilt for Haywood County Hospice in 2002, 2004, and 2005.

Each year Wendy Bowen and Jane Cole propose a "challenge" for the Shady Ladies. The guidelines and theme are different each time. This year's challenge was Seeing Orange. Each piece in the exhibit had to incorporate the color orange and had to be 24 x 24 inches. Thirty three women rose to the challenge. They hope you enjoy the results.

Haywood County artists will open their working studios to the public in the first ever studio tour, Haywood Open Studios Tour, on Oct. 7 & 8, 2006. Visit with artist in their working environment and see the creative process first hand. Best of all you can purchase one-of-a-kind works of art.

Visit over 30 artists' studios on the first annual Haywood Open Studios Tour. On Oct. 7, from 10am-5pm and Oct. 8, from noon-5pm, these artists will graciously open their studios for the public's enjoyment. The artists will be present to answer any questions regarding their work, and hopefully give some interesting insight into their particular studio-set-up and style of work. The artist will also have examples of their work for sale at their studios.

To assist "studio seekers" in locating the artists' studios, a Tour booklet will be provided. This booklet will have a description of each artist's work, directions to their studio, and a general map showing each location in Haywood County. These Tour booklets will be printed as an insert in the newspaper as well as being available through the Tour artist, many Waynesville businesses, and at Gallery 86.

From Sept. 20 through Oct. 14, Gallery 86 will display work by every artist on the Tour. This exhibition is a great opportunity to preview the different styles of work you will see on the Tour. The Tour is free and promises to be an exciting addition to the Haywood County Arts Council calendar of events.
