Artists' Guild of Spartanburg in Spartanbrg, SC, Features Works by Grace Scherer

The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, SC, will present the exhibit, In Awesome Wonder, featuring works by Grace Scherer, on view in the Guild Gallery at the Chapman Cultural Center from Sept. 3 - 28, 2008.

The works, all oils, depict places and faces of the Upstate. Among them are scenes of the Saluda River, Jones Gap, Table Rock, Caesar's Head, the Reedy River, Lake Jocassee and Paris Mountain.

Scherer, a native of Fredonia, NY, who now lives in Greenville, SC, received her degree from Syracuse University and has taught art in public and private schools. Her works are in public and private collections throughout the eastern United States and she is represented in galleries in Maryland, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and South Carolina.

In her artist's statement, Scherer says that the inspiration for her work comes from the beauty of God's creation. "Every painting expresses to the viewer the personal feeling of the artist toward the subject. Like a signature, this expression is made individual by the use of line, shapes, stroke and color. The ever changing look of nature and the reflection of a lifetime in a face are enduring. The possibilities are endless."

Scherer studied watercolor under Tony Couch, Tony Van Hasselt, Frank Webb and Edgar Whitney. She has taught in the Fulir Program at Furman University and at Greenville Technical College.
