Charlotte Art League in Charlotte, NC, Offers Exhibit of Political Works

The history-in-the-making 2008 election serves as both backdrop and inspiration for Political Revolution, a themed exhibit exploring revolutionary thought and the questioning of the status quo. The show opens Sept. 5 at the Charlotte Art League's CALeidoscope Gallery in Charlotte, NC, and continues through September 26.

The current political climate, with "Change" as a seemingly ubiquitous rallying cry from candidates, activists, and voters from across the ideological spectrum inspired the concept for the show. Regardless of the outcome of the upcoming US elections, the fact that candidates from gender and racial backgrounds previously considered "unelectable" are now legitimate contenders for the highest office indicates a fundamental, even revolutionary shift in the country's attitudes and politics. The works on display at Political Revolution consist of both real-time visual interpretations of this shift as it happens, and of the concept of political change in general.

The exhibit stands firmly within the historical tradition of art-as-social-commentary. From friezes depicting ancient conquests to "Guernica," from cave paintings to op-ed cartoons, art throughout history has provided valuable insight into the events and thought prevalent at the time in which it was created. It functions as a platform for artists better equipped to express their views on the politics of the time visually as opposed to verbally.
