Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Tom Nakashima and Lynn Saville

Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present and exhibition of two exceptional artists, Tom Nakashima and Lynn Saville, on view from Sept. 5 through Oct. 31, 2008.

Tom Nakashima, currently the Eminent Scholar in Art at Augusta State University, has participated in over 30 solo exhibitions across the nation. Deeply influenced by nature and social conditions, this artist weaves a narrative of nature controlled by man and then nature reclaiming man's handiwork. Beginning with nature - piles of dead branches silhouetted against the ground or sky - he transforms them into monumental compositions.

Breaking his image into a grid and working within the individual squares, he creates small abstract paintings that unite as a whole when all grids are complete. Wood becomes paper that again portrays wood in its natural state - a transformation. Closer observation of Nakashima's techniques make us question reality, question the mass of that branch as seen from a distance which dissolves into abstract collage when viewed much closer. Another transformation has taken place.

Lynn Saville, originally from Durham, NC, and a graduate of Duke University, now lives and works in New York City. Exhibiting internationally, her work is found in many museum collections, including the Museum of the City of Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte where she had a show in 2007. Working in the post-twilight hours and focusing on the urban night landscape, Saville creates a universe in which things are not what they seem. A statue on a Manhattan rooftop appears to be made of flesh by moonlight, and the evanescent trail of movement captured by a slow camera shutter is a ghostly presence. In any given setting, she waits for the picture she feels is there to emerge. "The resulting portraits reveal the intimate life of a place apart from its inhabitants, the quiet drama of empty streets, sometimes inclement weather and traffic signals that plays out mostly unseen."
