Hampton III Gallery in Taylors, SC, Features Works by Glen Miller

Hampton III Gallery in Taylors, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Glen Miller: Labyrinth, on view through Sept. 26, 2009. The subject of the paintings are broken parts of trees on the forest floor.

Miller offers the following statement about his works: "This is my first series of works shown as a group that does not have the figure as the central focus. Although greatly influenced by my figurative inclinations, this body of work has only one piece with figures and they are immersed in a natural environment. All the images in this series are derived from encounters on one trail that I hiked many times in 2007 which was a time of great transition for me. The trail itself was quite labyrinth-like, winding its way to a mountaintop center and continuing downhill through steep, rocky terrain to where it began. It was a place to regroup and a way to reconnect to the Appalachian influences of my youth, the colors, textures, and shapes that surrounded me for many years and to which I find myself returning with an interest and vision reshaped, or perhaps tainted, by experience."

"When I decided in 2008 to do a body of work from this experience, I chose to focus on the downed and disconnected trees that littered the trailside. This body of work attempts to present these natural forms in a way that reveals a very human experience of the object. In the process of sketching and photographing them as monumental forms the tree forms easily became empathetic figures as well, some quite graceful, some sensual, some very complex and expressive even in repose. The composition and most of the coloration were determined in the studio. I enjoy the idea that paintings can connect subject matter with experience through tactile and visual qualities other than just reproduction. I hope these paintings celebrate a human experience as well as the natural beauty of the subject."
