Ciel Gallery in Charlotte Offers Juried Show

Ciel Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present Transitions, a juried show featuring works by local and international artists, on view from Sept. 6 - 28, 2013. A reception will be held on Sept. 6, from 6-9pm.

Juried by Carole Choucair Oueijan of California, the show features works by artists exploring visual or emotional shifts.

With visual contrasts in both color and form, Punctuated Equilibrium, a mosaic of glass and stone, was created by Julie Sperling of Ottawa, Canada. “Punctuated Equilibrium is my tribute to the talented graffiti artists who inject life, color, and vibrancy into what is oftentimes the bland, structured concrete mass of the city. The graffiti art breaks this monotony, sending out ripples of energy that eventually fade as the regularity of office towers and right angles reasserts its dominance. This piece depicts that transition; the chaotic energy and irregularity of the stones surrounding the graffiti slowly evolves into the very regular and uninteresting black opus regulatum section at the top.”

Deb Aldo’s Stratum explores a similar divergence in the natural world. “The horizontal layering of Balinese stone, smalti and glass is both naturally and artificially formed. This abstraction refers to the geological stratum; bands of different colored or structured material exposed on cliffs, riverbanks, and highways. The transition of sediment to stone is a long and slow process that happens over thousands of years. This piece also represents an allegorical statement with multiple meanings.”

Sewailu Auzins goes beyond the readily and even the partially visible to present a purely emotional shift with Compliance, a study inspired by Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s Infidel. Using glass, stone, and bone, “This piece shows the transition and acceptance that is the goal of a Muslim woman.” The end product is a woman orderly and calm on the surface, but with a deep underlayment of pain and suffering that results from suppressing her soul, her heart, and her creative life energy.”
