Corrie McCallum Reveals The Hidden Image at City Art in Columbia, SC

City Art is pleased to announce that Corrie McCallum's work will be exhibited at the City Art Gallery located in the Historic Congaree Vista in downtown Columbia, SC. The exhibition entitled The Hidden Image will showcase McCallum's many talents in both printmaking and painting.

McCallum, a native of Sumter, SC, studied at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and the Boston Museum School of Art, Boston, MA. Since 1942, she has lived and worked in Charleston, SC. Through years of highly productive work and leadership in the artistic community, she has acquired a distinguished reputation as an educator, printmaker and painter. McCallum loves painting on a very basic level, whether she is reworking older pictures or starting new canvases. She experiments with materials and processes, layering paint surfaces and exploring different visual possibilities. McCallum is a strong follower of intuition in the process of creating art, and frequently calls her work "play"- suggesting both the freedom and the pleasure of artistic activity.

"We are honored to exhibit the work of a woman who has devoted her whole life to art," stated Wendyth Thomas, co-owner of City Art Gallery. "This is not a retrospective of McCallum's life work, but a solid representation that focuses on her prints and paintings."

"My concern is with the flow and brilliance of color, the well-constructed composition, the hidden image that I must make visible." - Corrie McCallum

Corrie McCallum: The Hidden Image opened July 30 and will continue through Sept. 18, 1999.
