
The Western North Carolina Fibers/Handweavers Guild, a non-profit organization located in Hendersonville, NC, whose membership spans NC, SC, TN, and GA, is sponsoring the "Blue Ridge Handweaving Show". Tryon Painters and Sculptors in Tryon, NC, invites all artists over the age of eighteen to participate in the "11th Biennial Western North Carolina Juried Art Exhibit". This important event will be held Sept 5 through Oct. 2, 2008, at the Tryon Fine Arts Center in Tryon. For their 11th Biennial Western North Carolina Art Exhibit, the Tryon Painters and Sculptors are tremendously pleased to have noted artist and professor, Jane Allen Nodine serving as juror. Currently Professor of Art and Gallery Director at the University of South Carolina Upstate, Nodine describes her own approach to making art as a "process of excavation." Awards will be given for first, second and third place in the amounts of $1000, $500, and $250. Two additional merit awards will be given: The Parker Prize for Painting and the Apple Award for sculpture, both in the amount of $125. A single work may be submitted. The work must be original and completed within the last two years. The piece must not have been shown in a previous WNC juried event, or in TFAC Gallery I. Eligible media are: drawing, painting and sculpture, (no prints, photographs, or computer generated art). Paintings may not exceed 36 inches in any direction. The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs in Charleston, SC, is calling for entries for the MOJA Arts Festival's "2008 Juried Art Exhibition", which will take place at the Avery Research Center at the College of Charleston from Sept. 21 - Oct. 30, 2008. The festival is a multi-disciplinary celebration of the rich heritage of African and Caribbean cultures. The exhibt is open to all artists residing in FL, GA, NC and SC. David H. Murdock, and the North Carolina Research
Campus (NCRC) invite you to participate in the North Carolina
Research Campus Art Collection Acquisition. Murdock is a collector
of fine art both personally and through his many generous gifts
to institutions and museums. Murdock's vision is to enhance the
environment of the Research Campus with exceptional art by North
Carolina artists. He will personally select many pieces for the
campus along with his special guests who will be invited to participate
in the purchase of art for their respective environments. The
submitted entries will be juried by Tom Stanley to assure the
permanent collection established for the NCRC will represent the
best quality and standards of the artistic community. The NCRC
is the brainchild of Murdock and will be a world-class research
hub for collaborative science to engender great discoveries in
health, nutrition and biotechnology. This juried art show and
sale will provide a unique opportunity for artists' work to be
seen and purchased by prominent art collectors and create a permanent
collection for NCRC that will be viewed by people from all over
the world. The NCRC Art Collection Acquisition will take place
in the buildings and on the streets of the NCRC. It will be held
in the early evening for the invited guests of Murdock. He is
inviting representatives from each of the participating NCRC universities
to select artwork for their buildings as well as fellow art collectors
and special guests to select pieces for their personal collections.
On the evening of the event, his guests and the artists will enjoy
an evening of cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while art selections
are made. The purpose of this format is to foster relationships
between area artists and benefactors of the Research Campus, to
establish a permanent art collection for the NCRC, and to enrich
the artistic heritage of the Kannapolis community and North Carolina.
The Juror is Tom Stanley, who is an artist/administrator, Chair
of the Department of Fine Arts at Winthrop University, and Director
of Winthrop University Galleries. Born in 1950 in Fort Hood, TX,
Stanley grew up in Concord, NC, where he began his first explorations
into art and music as early as 1960 with painted impressions of
Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond's Take Five. He received a BA in
Art from Belmont Abbey/Sacred Heart College in 1972 and a MA in
Applied Art History and a MFA in Painting from the University
of South Carolina in 1980. Stanley's work has been exhibited in
numerous galleries nationally. Recently, his work has been exhibited
at Barbara Archer Gallery in Atlanta, "Homegrown" at
the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem
and Gallery Twenty-Four in Berlin. In 2005 his "Floating"
series was exhibited at the South Carolina State Museum's "Triennial
Exhibition" and in 2004 at the New Orleans Center for Creative
Arts. In 2002-03 he exhibited at La Galerie du Marché in
Lausanne, Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, Musée de
la Halle Saint Pierre in Paris and the Halsey Gallery in Charleston.
In 2006 he had a solo exhibition in the Gallery at Carillon with
his series entitled The Neighborhood. Stanley's paintings have
been published in New American Painting 28 and 46; The Carolinas
Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow; Geneviève Roulin; and The
Drama. All artists must be 18 years old or older and must reside
in North Carolina. All work must be the original artwork of the
artist. These media are acceptable for entry: acrylics, water
media, graphics, mixed media, oils, photography, pastels, hand-pulled
prints, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, metals and glass. Digital
images must be sent in jpeg format on CD and have a resolution
clear enough to be easily viewed by the juror; a resolution of
150 to 300 dpi is preferred. Up to three views may be submitted
for each 3-D piece. Each digital image should correspond to the
entry number on your application. CD cover and disc must have
the artist's name in permanent black marker. CD's are not returned.
A maximum of 5 pieces is allowed for the jurying process. Entry
fee: $35, no matter how many pieces are submitted. Payment may
be in the form of cash or check and should be delivered with the
application, artist's statement and CD. Entry fees are non-refundable.
Checks should be made out to Cabarrus Arts Council. An Artist's
Statement must be delivered with the CD. This should be no longer
than one page and should include an explanation of the process(es)
of the artist's work. Artists will be notified of their acceptance
by e-mail or phone on or after Sept. 15, 2008.

The North Carolina Research Center Art Collection Acquisition
will be held on Oct. 25, 2008, on the NCRC campus in Kannapolis,
NC. Selected artists will be sent a complete and detailed logistical
plan. Each artist or a representative is required to be at the
site between 2-4:30pm to set up his booth. The event will begin
promptly at 5pm with a reception for Murdock and collectors. Each
artist will have an individual conversation with Murdock so that
he will become familiar with the work of each artist as he makes
his purchase selections. The rest of the collectors will be allowed
to purchase art beginning at 6pm. Artists are responsible for
all transportation and insurance costs. The NCRC does not require
a sales commission, so each artist will need to be responsible
for his or her own sales transactions. All work must be labeled
with a selling price. No "NFS" or "POR" will
be accepted. The artist must accompany the exhibit on the day
of the show, exhibiting work only in the categories for which
the artist was juried and accepted. The work must be consistent
with the application slides submitted by the artist. The North
Carolina Research Campus Art Collection Acquisition reserves the
right to remove any work it deems inappropriate or in non-compliance
with the stated guidelines of the show. Each artist will be responsible
for setting up his art display in a designated area. Artists may
choose an indoor or outdoor venue. Outdoor venue: tents and two
2'X8' banquet-size tables will be provided with electricity for
the artist's own lighting. Indoor venue: two 2'X8' banquet-size
tables and electricity will be provided. Linear wall space can
be provided for larger pieces; if easels are preferred they should
be provided by the artist. All sales are final. Artists will remove
displays at 9:30pm. Any artwork left on site will be considered
the property of The North Carolina Research Campus. The North
Carolina Research Campus Art Invitational is committed to a policy
of non-discrimination with regard to race, sex, color, or national
origin. AWARDS Prizes will be awarded by the juror on the day
of the show $1000 for Best in Show $750 for 2nd Place $500 for

The Center for Visual Arts at Clemson University in Clemson, SC, is calling for entries for its "Principles and Perspectives in Progress - 2009 Clemson National Print and Drawing Exhibition," taking place from Feb. 11 - Mar. 13, 2009. All US artist at least 18 years old may submit original prints and drawings in any medium, except photography. Completed entry must be postmarked on or before Sept. 19, 2008. Awards include: $750 first prize, $500 second prize, $250 third prize, to be chosen by the juror and announced at Juror's Gallery Talk. The exhibition will continue and expand the conversation on "Principles and Perspectives in Progress", the 2008-09 Clemson University Presidential Colloquium. Ideas that explore how values and views intersect and influence progress and in turn, progress as an influence on values and views are the point of departure for the works included in the exhibition. The juror for the exhibition will be Carmon Colangelo, who is the Dean of the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis and holds the E. Desmond Lee Professorship for Community Collaboration in the Arts. With 15 solo shows in the past 10 years and another 100 group exhibitions in the past two decades. Colangelo has exhibited widely, from Philadelphia and Washington, DC, to Argentina, Canada, England, Puerto Rico, and Korea. His works are in collections at the National Museum of American Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University. There is $30 entry fee for up to three entries. Make checks payable to Center for Visual Arts. Entry fee is nonrefundable. Each artist may submit up to three images. Entries must be submitted on a CD in jpg format at 300 dpi, 4"x6". Please name each image file with artist last name, entry number and artwork title. Please save all images with correct orientation. No slides will be accepted. Any work that does not match the digital image in quality will be rejected from the exhibition. Summerville Family YMCA is calling for entries for its 2009 Flowertown Festival
Art Contest. The Annual Flowertown Festival was established 36
years ago to support the programs and community outreach of the
Summerville Family YMCA. The Flowertown Festival has since become
a nationally acclaimed event - drawing over 200,000 visitors to
Summerville, SC, to see the wonderful arts and crafts, sample
goodies at the Taste of Summerville and enjoy the Children's
Jubilee. All set against a backdrop of azaleas, dogwoods, and
wisteria in the Town's lush Azalea Park, the Festival is one of
the largest events in the Southeast. The 2009 Festival will take
place Apr. 3 - 5, 2009. Twelve years ago, the Annual Flowertown
Festival Run was added to the Flowertown Festival activities as
the official kick-off event. Located in one of the South's most
beautiful locations, downtown historic Summerville, the Flowertown
Festival Run draws over 850 runners every year. The run includes
three distances: 10k, 5k and one mile - a distance for everyone's
pace. The 2009 run will take place on Mar. 14, 2009. Proceeds
for both events benefit the Summerville Family YMCA. The contest
details are: Entrants are asked to submit original paintings,
drawings or digital artwork to represent one, or both of, the
above mentioned events. The design entry must be appropriate to
be used on T-shirts, posters, brochures, billboards and other
