Here's a Carolina Arts Update! 7/22/05

erl originals gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is now closed. The following is no reflection on the artist(s) mentioned in this article. They still deserve the historical fact that this exhibition happened.

Here is an excerpt from an article in the Winston-Salem Journal's Dec. 10, 2004, edition: "In late September, (2004) erl's owners, Peter and Lee Swenson, and the company they operate, Bogart Management Group, were foreclosed on by their bank. They were barred from their gallery at 480 West End Blvd. for being months in arrears on rent and utilities. Peter Swenson is facing numerous tax-fraud charges, as well as a growing number of civil lawsuits filed by creditors seeking to collect payments they say are long overdue".

Upcoming Show at e-r-l originals in Winston-Salem to Feature Ceramics by Patrick Dragon, Watercolors by Richard Kaiser

e-r-l originals in Winston-Salem, NC, will feature graceful, elegant ceramic bowls by Patrick Dragon and landscape watercolors painted on location in Ireland by Richard K. Kaiser in a new show which will run through Nov. 22.

Patrick Dragon

Dragon began working with clay in 1977 after graduating from Northern Michigan University with a degree in art education and photography. For the next 10 years, he taught school, then in 1987, left teaching to devote all of his time to pottery. His most recent pieces - pit-fired, subtly ornamented bowls and other closed forms -- are virtual collages in a remarkable number of materials.

"I want to create a work that is light and airy, that gives a sense of almost floating," Dragon explains. "The bowls that I create are based on the random relationships found in my environment, thus giving you an intimate reflection of my world and the way I perceive it. The motifs and bold color relationships are inspired by the waters, the trees, the stars...the patterns I 'sense'- on the surface of the earth."

Dragon's ceramics have been exhibited at museums and galleries throughout the country, such as the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, the L.A. County Museum of Art, the American Craft Museum in New York City, the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian, Signature Gallery in Boston, and the Tokyo Crafts Exhibition in Japan. In addition, his artwork is part of numerous collections, such as The White House Craft Collection, Disney World Collection, Maitland Art Museum, City of Orlando, SunBanks, and Florida Power Corporation.

Richard K. Kaiser

In preparation for this show, Richard Kaiser, a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, spent six months earlier this year in County of Westhmeath, Ireland, traveling around the country and painting, primarily, on location. Many of his watercolors incorporate well-known sites while others project a feeling of what the countryside is like.

Kaiser has done illustrations for a number of companies, including Alcoa, Westinghouse, U.S. Steel, Pfizer Corporation, International Paper, Playtex Corporation, and Johnson & Johnson. His paintings are also in many private collections, including Bank of America, Wachovia, Duke University, and the late Charles of the Ritz, Paris.

Kaiser, who recently moved to NC, is a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Whiskey Painters of America, and the Garden State Watercolor Society, from which he received the 1983 Garden State Watercolor Society Award. In 1992, he received the Henry V. Gasser Memorial Award from the New Jersey Watercolor Society, which later awarded him signature membership.

Kaiser's watercolors have been featured in the American Artist Watercolors '87 and in American Artists' Watercolor Highlights - Collectors' Edition. He is also featured in F. and W. Publications (North Light) book Splash III. He has also authored a book, Painting Outdoor Scenes in Watercolor, which was published by North Light Publications.
