Hand in Hand Gallery Features Mixed Media Figures and Gourd Dolls

Hand in Hand Gallery, located in Flat Rock, NC, the studios and gallery space of Voorhees Pottery (David Voorhees) and Molly Sharp, jeweler, will be featuring the mixed media figures and gourd dolls of Gabriel Cyr and Sandy Blaylock of Many Voices Studio. Also featured will be the stained glass of Chuck Young and Deana Blanchard of Selena Glass & Metal. Their works will be on exhibit and for sale through Sept. 11.

Gabriel Cyr, known for her work in basketry and fiber arts, has been working with Sandy Blaylock, an archaeologist/artist, since 1991 to form Many Voices Studio. Together, they create a body of work utilizing natural materials and clay with embellishments in metals, beads, and any matter of found object. Cyr's fiber based mixed media figures are complemented with Blaylock's open fired porcelain work as masks, faces, and structural components of the work. Both Cyr and Blaylock live and work in Western North Carolina and are members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, and Carolina Designer Craftsmen.

Deana Blanchard has been a professional glass artist since 1978 and her husband, Chuck Young, has been at it since 1984. Since her start, Blanchard has expanded her work to lampworking, using Pyrex rods and a propane torch to make small glass objects. Young has begun doing metal work to create frames for large free-standing glass pieces that he and Blanchard have designed. They also work together to design and fabricate glass and metal cabinets, chairs, tables, and other furniture.

Selena Glass & Metal, their combined effort, has become known as one of the leading limited production stained glass studios in the United States. Blanchard and Young have won numerous awards, including most recently the Mayor's Purchase Award at the Piccolo Spoleto Crafts Fair in Charleston, SC.
