The Photographic Work of Fanjoy and Labrenz on Exhibit at the Hickory Museum of Art

Currently on display at the Hickory Museum of Art, in Hickory, NC, is the exhibition entitled the photographs of fanjoy/labrenz. Sponsored by Record Properties, Inc., the exhibition features the photographic work of two of North Carolina's most creative photographers, Sally Fanjoy and James Labrenz. From traditional studio photography to ground breaking experimental processes, the duo creates images that delight their patrons and inspire thought in visual art lovers.

Born in Pennsylvania, Labrenz moved to Hickory to attend Lenoir-Rhyne College. While there he created photographs for the college paper. The success of his work at the college lead him to begin working part-time as a photographer, on his own. By 1976, Labrenz was able to devote full-time energies to his art.

Sally Fanjoy is a Hickory native. In 1976, she moved to New York City where she attended the International Center for Photography and the School of Visual Arts. She began working as a professional artist and photographer in New York in 1984.

The couple has had numerous exhibitions of their work throughout the United States. The venues include: the New Wave Gallery in Wilmington, NC; the Center for the Arts in Pottstown, PA; the Highland Gallery in Atlanta, GA; the Statesville Art Museum and the Hickory Museum of Art.
Important commissions that they have received include two projects for the Western Piedmont Council of Governments and a project for the Governor's Business Council.

When asked about their exhibition at the Hickory Museum of Art Fanjoy says, "In the year of planning our exhibit, we were soon to realize that a 'thematic' presentation would not be possible, neither from a logistic nor creative standpoint. We live most of our lives through the lens of a camera. From snapshots of people, places, events, and family, to landscapes and drive-by shots, to studio lit portraits, the camera has become an extension, a magnifier of the world around us. This exhibition represents that varied world."

The photographic work of Sally Fanjoy and James Labrenz may be viewed at the Hickory Museum of Art through July 11, 1999.

Also showing at the Museum is the exhibit, People At Work, an exhibit of paintings and works on paper for the Museum's permanent collection. This exhibit will be on display through Aug. 7, 1999.
