Works by Amy Funderburk at Mars Hill College

The Weizenblatt Gallery at Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, NC, is featuring an exhibit of narrative paintings by Amy Funderburk through Sept. 26 entitled Wisdom of the Ancient Lore.

Funderburk's oil paintings are made up of two ongoing series: the Zodiac and Tarot cards. "Since 1990, I have been working on two figurative symbolic series. One series is based on the Zodiac, each work using an individual as an embodiment of the personality characteristics associated with each sign," says Funderburk. "The second series is my interpretation of the twenty-two Major Arcana of the Tarot. Comprised of a collection of archetypes, when arranged in order each series becomes a journey of spiritual development towards enlightenment. The viewer does not need to believe in the Tarot or Zodiac as divination tools to enjoy the rich diversity of symbolism that lies within these systems. These archetypes, defined by Carl Jung as the instinctual forces operating independently within the depths of human psyche, serve as a language for the subconscious. They link ancestral wisdom to our modern inner selves."

Funderburk was born and raised in Charlotte, NC, and now lives in Winston-Salem, NC. She received a bachelor's degree in graphic design from Appalachian State University, Boone, NC, and has exhibited her paintings widely in NC.
