Works by Thomas McNickle on View at Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC

The Charlotte, NC, location of Jerald Melberg Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of the works of Thomas McNickle. Included in this new body of work will be landscapes as diverse as the fields and streams adjacent to the artist's Pennsylvania home to the coastal islands of South Carolina. The exhibit will be on view through Nov. 13, 1999.

A member of the American and National Watercolor Societies, McNickle's exceptional technical ability has been evident since he first began painting in his teens. Throughout his career he has mastered the traditional landscape while simultaneously giving his format a fresh appearance with unexpected indications of pastel. In doing so, McNickle's paintings take on both a photo-realist and American impressionist style.

McNickle's approach toward painting and implementation is as unique as each image depicted. This intrinsic feature in his methodology is the Zen philosophy of rapid execution. Approaching each painting in a meditative state, McNickle relies on complete and relaxed concentration for the layering of direct, spontaneous strokes of color. The power and individuality of these brushstrokes transforms archetypal motifs into unique and personal images.

"Painting is not empirical or problematic. Painting is a mystery - an act of faith. The only position from which to confront a mystery is from within... to be completely enveloped and embraced by it until one becomes the mystery itself," says McNickle.

McNickle's work has been exhibited in over thirty museum and gallery exhibitions over the course of his career. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections including the Butler Institute of American Art, the Hoyt institute of Fine Art, Vero Beach Center for the Arts, Kansas State University, BASF Corporation, Bank of America and USAirways.
